MR. CLAYTON

Miv W. Lis&ant Clayton on coming forward was also received with a demonstration of; applause. It was, he said, his duty and pleasure to return thanks for the cordial support bo had received at the poll and for the fair arid impartial hearings that- had been given him during the campaign from one cud of the electorate to the’other. Mr. Clayton also referred to the good feeling which bad existed between the candidates during the contest, H was not aggrieved in any way at being placed at the bottom of the poll, and had put up a fight 'for his principles, .and the question was if those principles were right and good ones. He believed that they were the most desirable for the country, but the electors had evidently disagreed with them, and as he had failed he would bow to their decision, and he knew that he had the sympathy, of those who had boaten him. Although defeated he did mot intend to withdraw .from public affairs, and he hoped that he would always be found ready and willing to lend a hand to anything that tended to the advancement and improvement- of this district .and of the Dominion and Empire of which he was so proud. (Applause.) Mr. Clayton concluded by calling for three cheers for Hon. Jas. Carroll and Mr. Darton, which were heartily given bv the crowd, and at tlie instance of the Native Minister three rousing cheers were given for 'Mr. Clayton.
