SITTINGS IN CHRISTCHURCH

CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 18

The Supreme Court criminal sittings opened to-day. lis Honor Mr. Justice Denniston, in charging the grand jury, said that the calendar was fairly large. There were 19 charges against 11 persons. He was sorry that out of 11 persons to be tried no fewer than six were tried with offences of varying degrees of enormity against children, mostly very young children. With these exceptions the calendar was light. At the Supreme Court, Edward Potts', aged 36,and Frederick Creager, aged 20, both recently from Australia, where Creager had been twice convicted, were sentenced, Creager to five years and Potts to two years, for theft. Edward Kerr, aged 25, for breaking and entering, was sentenced to six months.

A CHINAMAN CONVICTED

AUCKLAND, Nov. 17

At the sittings of the Supreme Court to-day a Chinaman named Louie Yong, otlieriwso known as Sliue Hock, ‘was arrainged on a charge of having on or about August Bth last at Mt. Roskill murdered a fellowcountryman nained Fong Mong Chee. The jury brought in a verdict of manslaughter, and the prisoner was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.
