NEWSPAPER OPINION. VIEWS OF "KW ZEALAND TIMES.” _ [Special to “Times.”] WELLINGTON, Nov. IS. The “New Zealand Times’ refers to the “sensational result ’ of the local option polls, and adds: “In districts in the vicinity of Wellington thirty-five hotels and several clubs will be closed on June 80th, a number of men whose livelihood depended on continuance have been absolutely ruined, and a regime of sly-grog selling and social disorder may. be expected to follow. The figures as they came to ns last night fail to indicate definitely the results of the No-lic-ensc vote in several localities, but aseems fairly clear that the prohibitionists have disclosed augmented strength, for even where they have not secured No-license or reduction they have shown a gain of adherents at the polls.” AUCKLAND DISTRICTS. NO-LICENSE IN EDEN ELECTORATE. [Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Nov. IS. The final returns from the Parnell electorate are not yet available. No further figures than those published this morning will be ready until Monday. The present returns are as follows: Continuance 2644. reduction* 3394, No-license 3624, hut the fact that the number of votes recorded is still unknown makes it impossible to do more than surmise that reduction is probable' and no-license possible. Ten seamen’s voting rights have to he included. The total number or valid votes in the Eden electorate having been supplied, and the full returns being in. the result of the poll (subject lo the customary check count, and scrutiny) can be definitely stated as being that No-license is carried by a majority of 197 votes. In addition, to the hotels aifected by this decision of the electors, the Avondale Jockey Club will be unable after June 30th to have liquor on sale at their racecourse on racing days. The final returns from Waiteraata are'.Continuance 24-50, reduction 2943, No-license 3325. The valid votes are not totalled, but are estimated at 5913. If that figure is correct, reduction is lost by 19. No-lieense by 226. and no proposal is carried. Manukau is another district in the case of which the number of votes recorded is unknown. It is therefore quite impossible to give the actual result. On the figures, continuance 2254, reduction 3220, No-license 3559, it would appear likely that reduction is probability anil No-license a possibility. • Ihe last batch of returns to hand included the votes of the residents nil Pakatoa Island, where the Salvation Army Inebriates’ Home is established. These electors cast 30 toios tor continuance, 9 for reduction, and 12 for No-license. NO-LICENSE IN WELLINGTON SUBJTRBS. WELLINGTON, Nor. IS. Ju the Wellington Suburbs licensing poll the counting of 39 seamen’s rights and absent voters’ papers in Wellington Suburbs licensing poll lias nu?re used the No-license majority to XO-LICENSE IN BRUCE, DUNEDIN, Nov. East, Wellington City, Dunedin South and Chalmers. ’ It is considered probable that Nplicense will be carried in one district —M’asterton, while in two, Manukau and Parnell, reduction is considered probable and No-license possible. . WELLINGTON, Nov. 18. A telegram from Wanganui states that the report that No-license was carried in that electorate was a mistake. No proposal was carried. DUNEDIN’, Nov. 17.
