BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING.
TJie fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council was held last evening. Present : His WorsJiip the Mayor i(Mr. W. D. Lysnar), Crs. W., Pettie, J. Somervell, A. Sawyer, E. H. Mann, J. W. Williams, G. E. Darton, J. P. -Sheridan, J. W. Bright, and J. Whin-ray. w, Hori Papapa'ka and 20 other nat'wrote protesting 'against .""the drainage from the abbatoirs being allowed to into the sea near their pipi beds. Tke Mayor moved to the effect that the alleged grievance should ho remedied. Cr. Darton (sarcastically) :* Can’t the Natives shift their pipi beds ? Cr. Sheridan: Tlie letter is not worth taking notice of. There is no danger in the discharge. Cr. Williams: All shell fish are •particularly prone to infection bv sewage. - The letter was referred to the District Health Officer. Mr. it. Hay wrote stating that ho had arranged with Mr. Geo. Grant, c'f. Gisborne, tiV complete the taking- of the Borough street levels. It was decided to inform Mr. Hay that the Council woiikl hold him responsible for the comjdetion of the work, and approved of Mr. Grant •doing the work for Mr. Hay. Mr. H. J. Reed wrote drawingattention to the insanitary condition ot a number of drains in the Borough.
The letter was referred to the Inspector to report as to the condition ot the -drains.. The deed of the Council's lease of portion of the railway -reserve at Gisoorne was received for signature from .T* e P^ tment of Railways.—Crs lettie and Sawyer were appointed do sign the document. Mr. Leslie Reynolds wrote asking the Council to retain him to report upon a drainage scheme for the town. It wag decided to inform Mr. Reynolds - that the Council did not reQA\ire his services -at present. circular was received from the jPetone Borough Council asking cooperation, in bringing under the notice of Parliament the injustice done to the finances of boroughs through inability to collect rates oh .-workmen’s homes erected by the/Governmont. The Mayor said the question was an important one, and he thought a copy of the circular should be sent to Mr. Carroll. Cr. Williams: *And to Cr. Darton ; he is also a candidate. The Mayor’s suggestion was agreed The Department of Lands and Survey asked permission to lay down cement blocks marking the distance of standard chains on the Taruheru esplanade. The Council granted the permission requested. Messrs Nolan apd iSkeet, on behalf of Mr. Even Cameron, asked that a clause providing compensation for improvements should be put- in the new lease of the Waerenga-o-kuri reserve. • The request- was refused. .Messrs Olirisp and Coleman, advised tile Council that local bodies had - power to impound all dogs found without a proper registration collar in the streets, and to destroy the dogs la'fter impounding.—The letter was received. 3 r ?lie secretary, of the Hospital Trusts (Mr. E. C. Matthews) rrole stating that as the election of trustees must take place on the first Monday in December the Council wag asked to appoint two trustees.—lt ivas decided . that the Council meet on the d-.iv to make the appointments. iVIr. J. Griffin offered to sell screenings from the Patutalii stone crusher at Is 6d per cubic yard.—The letter was referred to tlie Overseer. A voucher for £337 10s, an advance payment on account of subsidy -for -rates, was received from the Valuation Department. ' The Overseer (Mr. W. Morgan) -reported that the footpaths in Fitzherbert Street and Read’s Quay had been formed and gravelled; and that the formation of the Albert. Street footpath was -near completion.—The report was received. jTho accounts were passed -for payment, and tlie Council discussed other questions, separately reported.
