lii reply to the AA'aihi Borough Council's; resolution, urging; the :s>eetlv construction of the East Coast railway to Gisborne through AA'aihi. the Ender-Seeretarv of -the Public AA'orks Department has written (says the AA'aihi correspondent of the Auckland ••Herald' 5 ) stating that a special Act of Parliament would be necessary to enable such a work to be undertaken. and as no such Act had been passed the Department could do nothing in the matter at present. At the meeting of the Council on Thursday evening. Mr. Donaldson urged persistent agitation in favor the construction of the line by th?*route advocated, and moved, ‘‘That in view of the more economical construction, its cheaper maintenance and working expenses, its comparative level grades, its shortening of the journey from Gisborne to Auckland via the Piako by 50 miles, and the fact that an immense tract of land would be opened up for settlement adjacent to a large-ly-’ximilared town, it is important in the best interests of the Dominion that the route of the Auckland to Gisborne-East Coast railway should be through AA'aihi. and that we press upon the Government- the urgeiijjT of authorising the route and vigorously prosecuting the work from this end: also, that the co-operation of adjacent local bodies interested be press the above claims of the Ea-- r Coast- railway route upon the attention of tlie Government.” The motion was carried unanimously.
