GISBORNE REPORT.

The “Labor Journal” for the month of November reports the to 1 - lowing as the condition of the tabor market in Gisborne : —Trade has considerably imnroved during the month, as anticipated, and retailers report very fair business. The building trade is still quiet, although there are no carpenters idle at the present time; but, as there is still very little new work in sight, local, men will be fortunate if they are kept fully employed. Bricklaying very quiet, and prospects hot promising. Several tradesmen idle. Carpentry and joinery quiet, but at present all journeymen are fully employed. Painting very busy, and all firms are working at high pressure; no tradesmen unemployed. Plastering quiet, -and one or two tradesmen idle. Plumbing - and gasfitting fairly busy; all hands fully employed. Cabinetmaking and upholstering has considerably improved since last month, and all hands are fully employed'. Sawmilling busy. Electrical engineering quiet. Fitting and turning busy; all hands working full time. Bootmaking (repair shops) very busy, and working overtime. Saddlery and harness - making very busy ; all hands are fully employed, and a number worked overtime during the month. Dressmaking and millinery very busy, and likely to continue so •for some time; employers complain of scarcity of assistants. Tailoring (order) very busy indeed. Bookbinding busy; two firms worked overtime during the month. Printing fairly busy. Tanning, currying, fellmongering; slaughtering, freezing, and preserving—The season has not yetcommenced. One company has been putting through small Jots. Blacksmitliing very busy; no tradesmen idle. Coach and carriage building very busy indeed, and all firms are working at high pressure. Cycle and motor trades busy. Farming, dairying. etc., are now in full swing, and the factories report that the supply is considerably in excess of that- for the corresponding month of last year. Cropping lias been gone in for more extensively than is usually the case in this district. Unskilled labor: A large number of laborers, mostly men who have been paid off from the North Island Main Trunk line, have arrived lately, but it lias been impossible to place all.
