GISBORNE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Grisborne School Committee was.held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs J. Somervell (chairman), G. Wildish, F. W. Ilia cli, August Sawyer, G. Barton, Revs. W. Grant, and L. D. Thomas and Mr. F. J. Rowley (headmaster;) The Chairman stated ho had received a letter from the. Board of Education to the effect that after December 31 the High School would be under the control of the Board of Governors.

Mr Wildish said ho could not understand the position, ami asked if Mr Rowley could give them any light on the subject.—Mr feowley said he had not the, slightest doubt but that the ITigh School would be disestablished, but the Board of Governors Iliad no authority to do so. They could establish another school. So far he had received no notice personally about the disestablishment. .

In reply to the Rev. W. Grant, the Chairman said lie understood from tho letter (which lie had forgotten to bring to the meeting) tbit the High School after December 31 wa s to be under the control -of the Board of Governors. —Mr Darton said he also was seeking information on the subject. The question of disestablishing their High School had nothing to do with the Board of Governors. He thought the committee had not been courteously treated in this movement. He was quite in Hie dark, but intended' to make enquiries. _ After further discussion it was decided to await any action of the Board of Governors to establish a new High School. Tlio headmaster (Mr F. J. Rowley) reported' that the attendance since last meeting had been good. It had averaged 501.6 or 92.2 per cent of the roll number, which liad averaged 924 The inspectors paid their annual visit to the school last week. On October 24th tlio formal opening of tho swimming bath was held. He reported the offer of a cun to the School Committee by the Mayor, (Mr W. D. Lysnar) for annual competition among the school children in life-saving. During the next month the attention of the children would be occupied chiefly by examinations. Candidates from the school would sit for the matriculation, the junior civil scholarship, and senior and junior 'free-placo examinations. The school would close for the .midsummer vacation on Fridav, December IS. Oil the motion of flic. Rev. W. Grant, seconded by Mr Wildish, it was unanimously decided to express appreciation and cordial thanks to Iris Worship the Mayor for the offer of the cup.
