The “Westminster Gazette” says that the Governemnt must advance an alternative line of taxation, which will automatically reduce the publichouses and secure the nation’s rights in the liquor monopoly. The “Pall Mall Gazette” declares that the House of Lords will stand as tho champions of public opinion against a detested measure, which nominal representatives of the United Kingdom are trying to force upon the Tho “Mail” and “Standard” suggest that Mr. Asquith would ho very glad if the Licensing Bill were dead. The “Chronicle” and “Daily Nows” loudly protest against the Unionist Peers’ action, and revive Mr. Lloyd George’s threats of high license duties. Tho “Times” urges Mr. Asquith to withdraw tho confiscatory proposals and pursue a policy of moderation as in the Education Bill, and adopt the minor regulative and administrative provisions. The House, of Lords would thon Willingly join in quickening the operation of Mr. Balfour’s Act.
IMPORTED MEAT. AN IDENTIFICATION BILL. LONDON, Nov. 25. In tho House of'Commons, a Bill was introduced by Mr. W. M. Field, providing for methods of identifying all imported meat, whether fresh or frozen, and thereby ensuring that it shall not bo sold as native produce. The Bill was read ia first time. Mr. Sydney Buxton, speaking at Alford, said that whatever might happen to the Government measures tho House of Lords would not dictate to tho Government when it should dissolve Parliament.
THE BRITISH REVENUE. TAXATION PROPOSALS. LONDON, Nov. 25. The “Daily Chronicle” advocates a tax of a penny in the pound on land values, yielding 22| million. The “Daily News” declares that it is possible to raise seven million pounds yearly by increasing the liquor taxation to the American level.
