FIRE AT SOCKBURN.
A SOAP FACTORY BURNED. [Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 26. A largo, old wooden .building at Sock bur n, used as a soap factory, by Mr. W. H. Downer, ;v:is totally destroyed by fire during tlie early hours of yesterday morning. The building contained 40 barrels of tallow (30 barrels of which were saved), a quantity of soap and resin, a,so machinery and plant, the whole of the buildings being valued at- £IOOO. The conflagration is supposed l to have originated in the vicinity of the boiler, tho fire of which was left banked up as usual for tlie night- at 10.30 o’clock the previous evening. When the outbreak was discovered by Mrs. Downer the portion of the building near the boiler was all ablaze, and the firm hold which the fire had obtained made it an impossibility to suppress the •flames. The building and stock wore insured for £650 in the Liverpool, London -and Globe Office.
