COMMONWEALTH POLITICS * THE FEDERAL OPPOSITION. REDUCTION IN DEFENCE FORCES. United Press Association. Copyright MELBOURNE, Nov. 27. Mr. Joseph Cook has been elected Leader of -the Opposition. A resolution regretting Mr. G. H. Reid’s retirement and appreciation of his splendid services to the party was adopted. Mr. Mahon, Minister for Home Affairs, introduced the Capital Site Bill in the House of Representatives. It provides for an area of not less than 900 square miles.
A return tabled in the Senate shows that in seven years the Commonwealth defence forces were reduced from 29,069 to 22,631. In the Legislative Assembly leave as given to -introduce a Daylight Saving Bill similar to that now before the House of Commons. SYDNEY. Nov. 27.
The Labor Council has adopted a resolution protesting against the Government arranging with the Salvation Army to bring out -immigrants. X -BRISBANE, Nov. 27.
It is proposed to celebrate tlie jubilee of responsible government by the establishment of a university.
STATE GOVERNORS. A MOTION TALKED OUT. BRISBANE, Nov. 27. In the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Airey’s motion, favoring choosing State Governors from prominent Queenslanders, was talked out. Mr. Bowman repudiated the suggestion that the Labor party would follow Mr. Airey. He was opposed to State Governors all round.
