THE FOLLY OF STRIKES. LONDON. Nov. 27
Sir Christopher Furness, at Stock-ton-on-Tees,, deploring the folly of strikes, declared that in the past year iit the shipbuilding and engineering strikes the north-east coast men alone lost £850,000.

Tho Closer Union Convention is sitting -at Capetown. Sir Henry Villiers, president, states that no insurmountable difficulties have' been encountered, and there is a reasonable iffobability of the Convention’s labors being successful.
THE GUINNESS MURDER
NEW YORK, Nov. 27
Lamphere, convicted of arson, and given an indeterminate sentence of from two to 20 years, appeals on the ground that he is either guilty of the murder of Belle Guinness and her three children or is innocent altogether.
SHORTAGE IN QUEENSLAND SUGAR CROP. BRISBANE, Nor. 28. It is estimated there will be a shortage of 20.000 tons in the sugar crop, due to frost and vermin.
