AUCKLAND, Dec. 2
At the Police Court Surah Chapped, a married woman, living apart from her husband, was charged with having neglected and ill-t rented her two illegitimate children. The Magistrate said the accused was living a llife of dissipation and debauchery, leaving the children to shift for themselves. But for the kindness of neighbors they would probably have died. The children wer© ordered to be committed to an industrial school. The mother was remanded for sentence.
THEFT OF MONEY—RESULT OF
A SPREE
NAPIER, Dec. 2
At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Jas. Duncan, who pleaded guilty to -a charge of stealing £2O i.it Blenheim ui May, 1900, was admitted to probation for two years on condition that he paid £1 per month towards the restoilition of the amount stolen. It wa s stated tho defendant had received the money 'from Thomas_ Henry to hank, but became intoxicated and spent it on a racecourse. He was willing to make restitution.
ROBBERY ON A STEAMER
WELLINGTON, Dec. 2
A second-class passenger who arrived from Sydney bv tho Mara m a today hid £75 worth of opals stolen from his' clothes while lie was asleep.
COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, a young man named Clias. Thomns Scoringe, committed for trial oil a charge of stealing money from a dwelling 'at Island Bay.
ASSAULTING THE POLICE—EXEMPLARY PUNISHMENT.
Joseph Shaw, alias McMahon, was fined £lO for assaulting a constable vhilo in tho execution of his duty.
