CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 9
A refreshing and muqh-needed rain sot in somewhat unexpectedly from the north-east, and continued steadily throughout the evening. The benefit of the downpour will be apparent in the course of a- few days, when the sun-browned lawns and dusty gardens will commence to make headway again after the long and trying drought.

Splendid rain lias fallen, and the harvest prospects are exceptionally bright.
