ATTEMPTED MURDER

AN AUCKLAND SENSATION.

MAN STABBED BY HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW.

AUCKLAND* Dec. 15. George McGuirk, about 30 years of age, formerly an inmate of tne Mental Hospital, was arrested last night on a charge of attempting to murder his brother-in-law, George. Berrett, a resident of Devonport.

McGuirk, having been refused entrance to Berrett’s house, attempted to break down the back door. Berrett stepped l outside, and threatened McGuirk with the police, and the latter turned to leave the premises. Suddenly, it is alleged, he seized what appeared to be a knife, and stabbed Berrett in the neck. The latter was found in a poo! of biood. The wound missed the_main artery, hut went through the muscles of the neck to the vertebra. Berrett, after having been attended by a doctor, was removed to the hospital. 'His condition is serious, but it is not supposed that the result will be fatal.
