The plans were on view, and the firmnnil ev.nressed appreciation of the
work. , . Mr. Arthur Rusher applied for a license for a billiard room in Gladstone Road. A similar -application was received from Mr. G. E. Bull, through his solicitors, Messrs Chrisp and Coleman. The Mayor suggested that the Building Inspector and l the police should report upon the suitability of the buildings for the purposes of a billiard room.
Cr. Mann moved a resolution on the lines suggested by the Mayor. Crs. Bright, Sawyer, and Somervell spoke against the Council increasing the number of saloons in tho town. Or. Williams said the refusal of new. billiard licenses would create a monopoly of the business. He understood that even the Y.M.C.A. had billiard tables in their rooms. Cr. Mann’s motion was carried. Messrs Blair and Sainsbury, solicitors for Mr. T. A. Bathgate, wrote asking that the Council should allow their client £SO compensation for the setting hack of the frontage of a section in Russell street. Cr. Sheridan said the demand was absurd. The value of the section had been improved'. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. Mr. M. B. Mander wrote claiming £IOO as compensation for 29 perches of land taken to form a road in IVhataupoko. The letter was received, and will be referred to the assessors. A letter was received from the Cook County stating that every facility would Be given to the borough to acquire a quarry of 04 acres in area at IVarhirere.—The matter was left to the Mayor’ to attend to. A copy of the demands of the Gisborne Drivers’ Union was received. The demands were referred to the Finance Committee, with power to apply to the Arbitration Court to have the Council excluded from the
list of 'respondents to the demands. The General Manager for Railways (Mr. T. Ronavne )wrote stating that as the whole of the railway reserve at Gisborne would ultimately be required for railway purposes, the Department .*• could not permanently alienate any . portion of it to the Council.
