FRUIT (HAWKING IN AUCK- . , LAND. AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. The- street hawking of fruit (lias increased so much this season that shopkeepers are loudly protesting. The matter wasdiscussed by the City 'Council. The Mayor stated tliat there was urgent need for (legislation to enable locail bodies to deal with this and other mattorn. While every facility should bo given people to obtain cheap fruit, etc., the interests of ratepayers must he considered N A motion was carried referring tlie matter to the legal- committee, with tho object of concerted ,action being taken with other councils.
AUCKLAND TOWN HALL—OAMARU STONE TO BE USED.
A sub-committee of the City Council recommended that Chirk Bros.’ A brand of Oaniaru stone be used for the Auckland Town Hal'!. It is estimated that 36,000 cubic feet- will he required.
WANGANUI TOURIST TRAFFIC
WANGANUI, Dec. 17
The summer tourist traffic on the Wanganui River started yester-dny, the itinerary being now daily from Wanganui, Mondays excepted, and daily from Pipiriki, Tuesdays excepted. A large tourist traffic is expected. this season. ’WELLINGTON RECLAMATION WORKS. WELLINGTON. Dec. 17. A poll of Miramar ratepayers was taken yesterday on the Council’s proposal to borrow £-5000 in connection with certain reclamation works, to he carried out in that borough by the Wellington Harbor Board. The proposal was agreed to by 8S votes to two.
ARAHUR A LOSES A PROPELLER
On her trip from Westport to Nelson the Anah-ua lost her port propeller. The vessel arrived in V eillington this morning. DIVORCE COURT. .In the Divorce Court Jane Ethel Ryan obtained a decree nisi for dissolution of marriage with Charles V . C. Ryan, jeweller, on the ground of misconduct. A similar decree was obtained bv Frank Win. Wise, billiard-room proprietor, against- Alice Mary V ise, on the ground of desertion.

The Presbvterv declined to support the call of the Rev. John McKenzie to the First Church, Invercargill, it being represented that his good work at Christchurch was not completed, and it was his own wish to remain here in the meantime.
SUPREME COURT CASES. DUNEDIN, Dec. 17. At the Supreme Court this morning Peter Henry Sleikel, for obtaining goods and money by means of false pretences -at Temuka, was sentencedto 18 months’ imprisonment. Henry Walter Marsden, for, breaking and entering and stealing at To-t-ara, received a sentence of two years.
A BICYCLE THIEF. Robert Walter Silberman, charged with stealing three bicycles at different times, intimated his intention of pleading guilty, so that he might go to the Supreme Court for sentence. ELECTION EXPENSES. TIMARU, Dec. 17. As yet only one candidate for the Timaru seat, Mr. .1- Mahoney, has sent in a return of his election expenses, which amounted to £2O 15s. Mr. Mahoney also forfeited his £lO deposit.

OAMARU, Dec. 17. A Military Court of Inquiry sat here this morning to inquire into certain volunteer irregularities, two well-known lpcail officers and a staff sergeant-major being implicated. Those comprising, the Court are Colonel Head (president), Mujor Richardson .(Christchurch), and . Captain Barcilay (Waimate). It is anticipated that the proceedings will last for Borne time. A large number of ‘Witnesses were subpoenaed.
