DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES.
MANGAPAPA SCHOOL
The annual distribution of prizes in .connection with the Mangapapa School was Held yesterday afternoon. There was a full attendance of the children, and a number of their parents and friends were also present. Mr. AV. Lissant Clayton presented the general prizes, and in the course of a short address to the children he said that lie hoped they would not only value the gifts they were going to receive as prizes, hilt- would regard them as an incentive to rise to still higher things. He referred them to the lives of two great generals, the Duke of Wellington and Lord Kitchener, neither ol whom had been particularly bright while at school, but who by hard work had attained a very high position in the world, lie would urge his hearers to -act honorably and truly, and to strive hard, so that each one of them would have an opportunity to rise to the top of the tree in whatever sphere their future might be cast. (Applause.)*'* Mr, Clayton then, proceeded to give out the prizes, adding a word of praise and encouragement to each recipient. ' At the conclusion of this portion of the proceedings, Mr. R. Cole, headmaster, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Clayton, not alone for presenting the prizes, but for live kindly interest lie took in the school throughout each year.
The motion was passed with acclamation, and Mr. Clayton, in replying, said that- although he was a great deal older than most of those present he was not too old to have a hoy’s heart, and he hoped that the children would still continue to look upon him as their friend.
The prizes won in the Bible class were then presented by Air. AY. H. Powell, and an illustrated book was presented to each child in tlie infant class.
‘ Mr. Goldsmith urged the non-prize-winners not t-o be disappointed, hut to continue to work hard in an endeavor to be more successful next year. On behalf of the children of the school. Miss Essie Scott presented Mr Cole, headmaster, with a handsome shaving outfit., and read a short address expressing their appreciation of him as a. teacher.
„Mr. Cole replied, returning thanks for the children’s gilt. He was glad that his efforts had been appreciated. He had always endeavored; and would still endeavor, to do his best to help them on. (Applause.) The prizes won by the girls of the sewing class were also distributed, and at the instance of Air. Goldsmith cheers were given, by the children for the teaching staff and the visitors. Then gathering then broke up with mutual expressions of goodwill for Christmas and New Year.

MRS. HOGG’S PRIVATE SCHOOL
Av very enjoyable (afternoon was spent yesterday at Mrs. Hogg’s private school, “Et/tric,” Clifford Street, the occasion being the,,, closing of the school for the Christmas vacation. The parents and children aasemtoeld ii-n the spacious new schoolroom, where the work of the pupils was exhibited, .and excited much (admiration on account of tlio great progress made in so short a period, the s-ohooa having ibeen but recently opened.
