BUILDING IN WELLINFTON.
AN EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME
The carrying out of the big building scheme which was sanctioned by Parliament only a few weeks ago, is mow in its incipient stages. The new Government House at .Mount View will be the first work to be started, but the proposed new Pnr liament House is now receiving expert attention. The Public V orks Department expects to be in a position to call for competitive designs for this building by tlie end of this month. The preliminary work consists of such specifications and drawings as will be necessary for the information df competitors. Architects wicl be invited to submit designs for a building in. stone, brick, or ferro-coucrete, .and one condiion will be that the building must be so arU.mged that a portion can be utilised along with the present wooden structuro = (formerly Government House), and the erection of tlie remaining .part deferred for some years. The plans will be submitted to Parliament. next session and will presumably be referred to a select committee of both Houses for adjudication. New Departmental buildings on the old Parliament! iry site are also in the o-eneral scheme, but as the big wooden building on-If amb toll Quay is considered good for another 10 years, lit is not expected that any -immediate action will bo taken in this respect.
