TROUBLES ON A STEAMER.
A HOUGH EXPERIENCE

WELLINGTON, Dec. 19
Tlie steamer Morayshire which comes from 'Liverpool, via the Cape, ■berthed, at- Wellington yesterday imorning. She had on hoard 160 seterage passengers, mainly immigrants. Of these only 36 were assisted, and some of them had capital up to £2OO. The passengers Iliad rather an unpleasant experience at 2.30 a.m. on the Bth of .December. The circulating discharge pasaige of the condenser burst and was followed by it big rush of water to the engine room. Mr. G. Blacklock, chief engineer, was in his cabin at the time, and rushing below he saw that there was no time to lost to prevent the flooding of-the engineroom, the extinction of tho fires and possibly more serious (results. The engines were stopped and the holes in the fracture were plugged with •wood. The ship wws hove-to for 37 hours. Tho weather was particulanly had and the vessel rolled rail under during the carrying cue of the temporary repairs, which were extremely (difficult. One of the sails was blown clean awixy, nearly carrying the second officer (Mr. Smitbers) with it. As it was he was badly knocked about but .remained on duty.. A very fine -pedigree Clydesdale stallion for “a Wnikato breeder came through the troublous time all right.
