CHRISTMAS EVE.

A WET NIGHT,

Christmas Eve in Gisborne was wet. Rain fell in torrents, and the crowd that lined the streets had, ’from time to time, to take refuge from the downpour under friendly verandahs. Even in those circumstances the crowd was very good tempered, and happy, <hut the ram spoiled a good deal of the animation that is usual on the night before Christmas. The shops, one and all, did-a brisk biisiness, many not closing until after 11 o’clock." Screeching toys, trumpets, and various instruments were to he heard, everywhere, hut there was very little hoifiterousness. The crowd kept -in the streets until a late hour, and before 11 o’clock the City, Federal and Salvation Army hands started out on a round c/i carol playin<r. The frequent showers were very discouraging to the musicians, and few localities were visited. Christmas Eve was shorn of a great deal of its pleasure by the rain and the people "of Gisborne will have somewhat unpleasant memories of the ni"lit of December 24th, 1908.
