At Tai Tapu on Wednesday night ’•Dick"’ A rust, the World’s Champion Sculler, was entertained at a social gathering by the residents of Tai Tapu and Ladbrookes, Mr R. Hcatoii-Rhodes. 51. P., on behalf of the residents of Tai rtipu, presented the champion with a gold watch and, on bell all of those of Ladbrookes, lie asked him to accept a gold chain and a gold sovereign case. It is understood that the movementafoot in tliis city to give Arnst a monetary testimonial is being taken up with considerable enthusiasm, many having spontaneously signified their intention to subscribe. A meeting of the local committee, who are interesting themselves in Arnst, will probably be held soon to discuss the desirability of the proposed race with Barry, the English champion sculler. YN AUSTRALIAN APPRECIATION. *
(From the Sydney ••Referee.”) % The cable news from V angamu that Richard Arnst is the new worldly champion alters all ideas that may hive been made for future matches .had Webb retained the.title. Arnst has expressed his intention of loving on the, Parramatta in 'future contests. and the probability is that lie will meet Ben T'horoughgood here for the title, and then possiblv take a. trip to England—that is, it Bariy will give him a race. . There is no doubt that Webb was m fine condition and full of confidence, and tail O beaten. That being so, it. is hardly likelv- that lie will try again tor tile title: but. will settle down m Wanganui content with his past glory.
