WHATATUTU EACES.
The Whatatutu Racing Club held its annual meeting on the Wihatatutu racecourse on Saturday. The day happily proved fine, and there was a good attendance of both town and country people, but the sport providfctS ?tlnCtly of a poor standard. hands of n ff 1 . app6 i red ) to be in the mnl iU’ i 6 J? c ¥y s and .bookmakers, whoso desires were laraelv represented in the .results. InaL laCe ? n , the Programme the frrTn. r home any distance, tho -fwm tc b twenty lengths ahead of > The horse Shanks, which iaL beei ! re ! la Imed 1 med since he has been relegated to the unregistered courses, started twice, and though he was able to win among fair company at; tne Makaraka racecourse a few weeks ago, he cut a sorry figure on Saturday an the Whatatutu Cup. He was also heavily backed by the pubhc for the Consolation Stakes, but was beaten about twenty lengths by Snider, a local horse. When the betting opened on this race Shanks was at a very short price, but just before tlie start the bookmakers would, allow the public to write their own tickets, Snider, the winner, replacing Shanks as favorite. The result of the race, once tlie starter let the horses go, was never in doubt. Snider was the first off, and the further lie went the further he got in the lead. The Club had stewards, and they were once called together to consider a protest in - the hurdle race, but the protest was dismissed. Beyond that engagement the stewards were left free for the day. The hurdle race was not taken seriously by the public. Six horses started, but only three finished, all the others refusing to negotiate the course. The Whatatutu Cup race was also a ridiculous event. Twelve horses started, but only one horse was fancied as a likely winner, and that horse won by ten lengths. The starting was regretable, and tlie least said about it the better. Tlie races were got off nearly an hour behind time, and the patrons from Gisborne were so indignant with the 'delay and the way the riders were allowed to carry on •at the post that they loudly protested. Mr W. 11. Campbell acted as judge, but lie had an easy task. Mr R. A. Murphy, the secretary, was courteous and obliging to ail, and did his utmost to make the meeting a success. Mrs Erskino had charge of the refreshment booth and provided excellent lunch and afternoon tea. A number of bookmakers were licensed, and all liad a most profitable day.
