THE POVERTY BAY TEAM.

MATCH AT NAPIER

NAPIER, Dec. 28,

The Poverty Bay cricket team arrived here .at six'o’clock this morning after a .good passage in the Waikare, and were met at the wharf by. Mr Smyrks, lion.- secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Association, and conveyed in a drag to Caledonian Hotel, where they were comfortably settled.'

The match against Hawke’s Bay was commenced at 11 o’clock. Gibson won the tbs*. for Poverty B ly and decided to bat. Gibson and Lang were the opening batsmen. Bedgrave’s second ball of his second over clean bowled Lang (1 for 1) and Anderson joined Gibson and the score was taken to 28, when the former was given out, 1.b.w., to Bed grave, after playing a good inn mgs'for 15. Moore succeeded and helped the captain to make the total 57, when Gibson was beaten by a break from O’Brien, alter a steady innings, for 21. Neither Cary nor Derecourt added to the score,"but Bowman played bright cricket, helping to raise the total, to 86 before he was smartly caught at mid-on. Moore was run out when well set. He watched the ball carefully and played a sound innings. Poverty Bay’s innings closed for 91. No less than five men failed to score. Bain commenced to fall as the Hawke's Bay innings commenced, rendering the ball greasy and the, foothold of the howlers insecure. Hawke .and Hindmarsh made a brilliant partnership for first wicket and a total of 167 was recorded before a separation was effected, when Hindmarsh was caught by Derecourt off his own bowling. He had contributed 75 to the score. At call of time four wickets were down for 212. Hawke gave a ' most attractive display,- hitting finely all round the wicket. Derecourt . bowled well, sending down 20 overs for 70 runs and three wickets.

THE PLUNKET SHIELD. AUCKLAND V. OTAGO. AUCKLAND, Dec. 28. The Auckland-Otago representative cricket match for the Plunket Challenge Shield was commenced to-day in beautiful weather and on a perfect wicket. Tlie attendance numbered about 2000. Otago won the toss and elected, to bat. There was a fine stand made for the first wicket, an even century being registered. The feature ov the innings was the score of 144 -'made by Wilson. Up to tlie afternoon tea adjournment the batting was of the careful order, the score then being 264 for three wickets. On resumption tlie team took more risks, with the result that wickets fell quickly, tlie last falling at 5.40 pan., with the score at 338. Howden was the 'most successful tnimllcw;'"taking seven wickets for 87 runs. Auckland lias made a bad start, Wordsworth bowling Jones Hie first ball of tbe innings.
