A number of Norfolk Islanders met in Auckland recently to talk over the supply of fruit and other produces to New Zealand. It was stated that the distance from Norfolk Island to New Zealand is only 620 miles., and it is one of the nearest islands which ■grow tropical fruit. There are 14 Norfolk Island families in Auckland. There is an abundance of good sound fruit ,on the going to waste, and no means'of sending it to New Zealand. It was resolved to form a Norfolk Island Co-operative Trading Company, the shares being £1 each, no member to own more than ten shares. It- was proposed to charter a vessel of about 150 tons, and begin the business as soon as possible. Pastor David Nield, of Wellington, was appointed secretary, pro tern. The motor car is destined to play no unimportant part in. future wars, and the Imperial authorities have not been slow to recognise it V-s £ valuable ally. The Lincolnshire Automobile Club recently formulated a scheme* by 'means of which its members would' co-operate with the Army Motor Deserve, and now the Royal Aueomobile Club has .under consideration a. scheme for placing at the absolute .disposal of the military authorities a large number of motor cars for use in event of a jgreat national emergency. This scheme will in no way trespass on the sphere of the usefulness of the .present Army Motor Reserve. The country is to be divided into districts as determined by the military, authorities, and the secretary of each district will keep a-list of motorists who have agreed to the conditions of the scheme.. The expense, of the organisation will • be \ very small, and in case of emergency the War Office, would direct every .secretary to wire to every member mi his district to rendezvous with his car where required. Experimental mobilisations will probably be held to test the efficiency of the .ocal organisations.
