MEN BATTLE IN SPACE.
HUNDREDS WATCH INSANE MAN
FIGHT WITH POLICE,
Atop the great iron tower at the Brooklyn end of the Williamsburg bridge in New York a thrilling struggle took place recently while hundreds of persons looked on from below. An insane man had eluded -the tower watchman, climbed an iron stairway at the top of the tower, 's3sft above tho East river, and was preparing for a leap into tlio river when two policemen climbed up after him. The appearance' of the policemen distracted the man from his purpose, and lie turned upon the bluecoats with a razor. The insane man rushed to attack them, and then on the narrow footing at the dizzy height a ten-minute battle took place, which held all who witnessed it speechless with horror.
Rack and forth the trio struggled, now on the verge of topping to destruction, and then to the centre ■ f the small platform. To those who gazed aloft it sefemect hours instead ‘of minutes' before the man was overpowered. Then he was handcuffed and taken, still struggling, down the tower ladders, trying •at every step to throw himself and his captors '.into space.
At the Eastern District Hospital, where the prisoner was taken, he gave his name as Joseph Ivratz.. of Brooklyn. He was placed in a padded cell.
