BOWLING.
TURAN GANUI CLUB
Saturday, January 2nd, saw a large assemblage of boAvlers- on the Turangamii Club’s green, when a full day’s pl-av Avas indulged in. The high - westerly Avind inconvenienced the boavlers to a certain extent, .but nevertheless good play Avas avitnessed. The- rinks played exceedingly keen. Quite a number of lady friends Avere present, and took great’interest in the play. Afternoon tea avas provided by Mr, J. P. Williams, avho avas kindly assisted by Mesdames Anderson and Morse and Miss Birrell, the refreshments being highly appreciated. Trroughout the day a large number of match and practice games avere played, the Handicap Pairs and Bennett Cup singles- being further adamneed. The folloAA'ing are the results of the match games:—
HANDICAP PAIRS. (A Section.) Hav and Nasmith," jiur (scr) 2G beat Edwards and McConnell (5) 21. Putting up a 7 on the second head gave the former pair -a good lead, but- on the Bth head Edwards and McConnell we re within one of their op]>onents.. tiie score being 9 to 8. The 13th head read: Nasmith 16, McConnoli 13, and lliu final head : 26 to 16. Edwards and McConnell receiving 5 points of a handicap, they thus suffered defeat by 5 points. * Anderson and Hajlam (sor) 26 beat Birrell and Williams (3) 18.—On the 10th head the game, was even, 10 all, but on the 17th head’the former pair had a lead of 4, which they gradually increased t-o 8 on the'final head.
Douglas, and Martin (scr) 31 beat Anderson and llallam (5) 21.—0 n the 6th head the latter pair led by 2. and were 1 in front on the 12th head—l 7 —1.6 Douglas and Mart in rea r ersed the position, on the I.6th head—22— 21, and scoring consistently in largenumbers beat their opponents by 10 points. *. BENNETT CUP.
A. Sawyer (2.1) beat G. J. Bennett (15) —On the 12th head the game avas all in Bennett’s faaor, he then being 14 to 4, but on the remaining heads Bennett only put up 1, avliile lii.s opponent scored 17, Bennett thus being defeated bv 6 points. AY. Rale!iffe (20 beat J. Colley (12). —Though Colley put up a goo<!_fight, Ratcliffe proved- too good., he leading throughout. B. Hird (16) beat M. Neill (15). Neill, had a good lead of 9 points on the 9th head—l 2—3, but on the twelve remaining heads Neill only scored 3, avliile ITiid put up 13. avinning on the last head by 1 point. AY. IT. Douglas (18) beat C. J. Bennett (16). —The game avas 4 all on the sth head, but on the 10th head Dqu glas had obtained -a lead of 4 points, avinning eventually by 2 points. B. Hird (23) beat J. J. Martin (IS). —Hird ran away at the start, and on the 9th head had a lead of 11. being 15 to 4. Martin, in the next few heads, reduced the deficit to 2 points--17—15, but Hird kept in front -and Won by 4 points. A. Sawyer (17) beat W. .Ratcliffe (16) —This was a splendid game, and provided, a close finish. On the 4th head Saavyer Jed by 10 to nil, but Ratcliff made a good recovery, and on the 17th bead avas only 1 down—l4—l3. From this point to the finish a dingdong “go” ensued., Saavyer just squeezing a-i.etorv by 1 point. J. Stormont (17) beat C. J. Bennett (12). —Stormont led throughout and avas never troubled. A. Saavyer (24) beat- W. Hay (10). — Hay avas outclassed throughout, Saaaryer having the game in hand from the start.
\V. Ratcliffe (23) beat M. Neill (14). —’This avas a good game, but Ratcliffe shoaved bis superiority in avinning by 9 points. It has been resolved by the Match Committee- to extend the closing of he Handicap Pairs competition till Saturday next, avhen -all game must bo completed, and the avinners of the sections avill be declared.
GISBORNE CLUB. The green of the Gisborne Bowling Club was fully occupied on Saturday, play being conducted! thereon both morning and afternoon. The green was very keen, but. tlio strong Avind blowing Avas not an aid to accuracy of play. Nevertlidlcss tile members enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Only one match game Avas played, W. R. Clarkson obtaining,a victory oyer McIntosh by 30 to 13 in? the champion cup competition. Of the large number of practice games that were got off, one of the most interesting Avas in which the team picked to represent the club in the Napier tournament— W. Pettier,," Eure, Pbnsford, and T. A. CraAvford (skip) met Wool-ton", Robert«ion, Coleman and Siinson (skip). . The challengers proved themselves doughty opponents to the representatives, so much .so that on the twentieth; head the scores wore even, 18 all. Tlio representative team managed-to obtain a single point on the final head, and thus won by the .narrowest possible margin. . Other games played resulted as folloavs: . - ~ "

CHRISTCHURCH TOURNAMENT

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 2. The Canterbury Boayling Association lias been apprised by the Hon. Mr. , Millar that concession tickets avill be' granted to all boavlers travelling to Christchurch for tlio boavling tournament. Applications for tickets must bo accompanied by forms signed by secretaries of tlio local clubs as to the competitors’ bona Tides. Concessionaries may return singly iF preferred, not in a body, as is the general rule.
