THE N.Z. ATHLETIC UNION
[Press Association.]
DUNEDIN, Jan..2
The Athletic Union sat till two this morning. There was a warm discussion in reference to the attitude of “lilywhite” amateurs towards cash ahlctics. The chairman said-that in die even t of the Union receiving much more criticism of the kind indulged in lately it would seriously consider the abolition of all amateur’ events from their programmes. Such a course would not cause trouble with the- Sports Federation. Southland proposed the abolition of permit fees for cycling events as well as amateur athletics. The chairman moved an amendment that no society contribute a permit or affiliation fees to anybody except the Athletic Union, but it being pointed out that such autocratic action would likely alienate the sympathy and support of affiliated societies it was withdrawn. All competitors in the Southland Caledonian gatherings of 1908 and 1909 were disqualified during the Association’s pleasure. Disqualification was - removed from Thomas Johnston, of the Bluff, who competed in the wrestling match at the Scottish Society’s gathering at Christchurch. The New Zealand Athletic Union meeting resumed this morning, Mr Duncan, of Wellington, was appointed to visit Auckland with the object of forming a centre there. The Union gave authority in the meantime to centres to permit persons to compete in Auckland. .TJj.e disqualifications of persons who competed at tiie Auckland gaslight proprietary meetings were removed as from the 30th December. It was resolved to remove the disqualification from the Dunedin. Ashburton, and Waimate Fife Bands, imposed for competing at the Christchurch Highland Society's sports two years ago. It was resolved to register the union under the Incorporated Societies’ Act. Mr Duffy, instructed by the west and east hr inch, moved that the union take control and share the profit or less up to 50 per cent, o >l all championship meetings. The motion was negatived. A\ estland applied for the next championship meeting. Feilding also .applied, and the meeting chose Feilding. Officers were elected as follows: G. W. "Woods, president; T. Duncan and -J. Clarke, vice-pre-sidents: committee, J. Kennedy. G. E. Perkins. C. E. Keast, G. E. Good, and R. Smith; auditor, W. Reid; seeretarv and treasurer. D- -J.
