HEAT AND BUSH FIRES:

The weather in Gisborne yesterday was very unpleasant. The smoke from the bush 'fires on the ranges in the west filled the atmosphere to a thick density, and although the sun was almost obscured the heat heat down upon the pavements and roadways and was very hard to bear. The sultriness of the weather greatly affected business, for only those people who had to come into town did so, the consequence being that the shops were almost empty of customers. The day was by far the worst experienced this summer, and rain, or, at least, a cool change would be welcome.
