FLAMES STILL UNCHECKED. SETTLERS RETREAT TO THE RIVERS. United Press Association. Copyright SYDNEY, Jan. 5. Bush fires are sweeping the country round Yass. Many settlers have been burned out. Women and children Avcre rescued by being .wrapped in Avet blankets. Others took refuge in tlio riAmr. The dairying districts on the south coast; and at Singleton, Dungog, Bathurst; and Wagga arc suffering severely. There have been numerous destructive outbreaks. The , toAvnship of Bumbaldry, in Grenfell district, is surrounded by fires. Round G Hilda gai 50,000 acres of grass have been destroyed. The fires are still unchecked. TREMENDOUS DAMAGE.
FRUIT CROPS TOTALLY DESTROYED. SYDNEY, Jan. 5. The damage .by fires at. Yass is estimated at over £IOO,OOO. Helped by a strong Avind, tlio fire travelled at the rate of fifteen miles an hour. The intense heat has caused severe injury to the fruit crops everywhere. Thousands of pounds worth of stonefruits, grapes, and tomatoes liaA'o been shrivelled up and destroyed. Numerous cases of heat apoplexy are reported.
