The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. FRIDAY, JANUARY 8,1909. GISBORNE-WAIROA MAIL SERVICE.

The facts published in another column regarding the relationship of Gisborne sand Wairoa emphasise the fact that a legitimate grievance exists in regard to the mail .service between, the two districts. There is a strong bond of interest between the people of Wairoa and Gisborne, and all along the intervening territory, yet a mail service once a week is considered ample to meet their mutual requirements. Of course, the position is simply ridiculous, and it is quite time some pressure was brought to bear on the postal department to give something like justice to these localities. It would be interesting to know what steps our Parliamentary representative lias taken to provide better communication for those settlers concerning whose welfare he was so greatly concerned a couple of months back. A few hundred pounds is all that is asked for to give a biweekly service on both the Morere and Tiniroto. routes, hut even this is ■refused by tlio Postal Department. At the same time a grant of two or three times that amount is available as a subsidy for the service between Napier and Gisborne. This is all very well for Napier, but it will amount to gross negligence on our part if we permit commercial and other interests with Wairoa to slip away because we are not sufficiently interested to demand reasonable mail communication. The present position ■could be remedied slightly if arrangements were made to send the coach via Morere on a Monday and that via Tiniroto on a Thursday. The objection to this is that the Auckland mail, which arrives in Gisborne on Sundays, instead of reaching Tiniroto ou Monday would not get there till Friday. This would be very unsatisfactory, but if a choice has to bo gnade, it would surely seem that Gisborne interests should take precedence as against those of Auckland. The matter is one that should be taken <up promptly by the local Chamber of Commerce.
