CHEAPER CABLES.
PROPOSED REDUCTION. ATLANTIC CABLE RATE. United Pbesb Association, Copybight OTTAWA, January 7. The British and Canadian Governmente are considering a twopenny Atlantic rate, beginning in July if the cable companies agree, and later if it is necessary to lay an Imperial cable across the Atlantic. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S ACTION. REDUCTION IN RATES APPROVED. (Received Jan. 7, 11.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 7. The Federal Postmaster-General approves of cheapening the cables if tlie Atlantic rates are reduced to two pence and rates to Australia can be reduced to 2.5 pence.
