THE CABINET.
THE NEAV APPOINTMENTS
[Special to “Times.”] WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. Tlic “Post,” discussing Cabinet changes, says: “In Mr A. W. Hogg we welcome to the Cabinet one of the staunchest and most persistent advocates of the leasehold system in New Zealand, and our only regret is that one who has devoted so much attention to this question and has for 1-5 years been closely connected with the work of practical administration as a member of the Wellington Land Board, has not been given the opportunity of bringing his experience and his energy to the service of the country at the Lands Office. Air Buddo. though on this and all other questions a politician of a much milder type than the member for Alasterton, being indebted for his appointment to geographical consideration rather than to personal distinction, is also opposed to further extension of the Crown tenant's right to acquire the freehold, hut against these two leaseholders there is the inevitable set off of two freeholders in Air R. Alckeuzie and Air T. Alackenzie.” In regard to the Preunier’s load the “Post” adds: "The result is that he is as badly overburdened as the late Air Seddon was. It is ridiculous to sujipose he can do justice to his two new departments, while continuing to look after Finance. Defence and the Post and Telegraph service, not to mention, such minor matters as the Land and Income Tax and the Electoral and Advertising Departments. So extravagant a monopoly lends color to the suggestion that the Premier is merely holding the new portfolios temporarily for Air AlcNab, whom he may be expecting to see replace Air AlcGowan at the Thames. Jet it is surely incredible that lie' can be contemplating a Ministry of eleven (members; three at least of the Ministers will not he overburdened with work.” In conclusion the “Post” in common with all hut the labor leaflet here, regrets the Hon. J. A. Alillar’s abandonment of the portfolio of Labor, and plainly asks what special qualification Air Hogg has for the position. The Hon. T. Alackenzie will be located in the old Alinisterial residence in Alolesworth Street, formerly occupied by Air Seddon. His private secretary will be Air Tv. E. Johnson, who was with the Hon. R. AlcNab. Mr C. E. Ala it hews, who has been private secretary to the Hon. J. AleGowan for years, will act in the same capacity for tho Hon. R. McKenzie, and Air J. AV. Black, cx-secrctarv to Air AlcNab. will be associated with the Hon. Di Buddo. Air AtcWhinney will be tho Hon. A. AV. Hogg’s secretary.
