EVEKITT BENEFIT FUND.

•; , [To the Editor.] Sir,—A large number of the people of Gisborne are under the oppression that Airs Evcritt, for whom a benefit concert was held some time ago, has received the proceeds thereof. I understand on’ the best authority that such is not the case. Airs Everitt, who-is sadly in need of the money for clothing and necessaries for her children, has not received a penny of the amount subscribed by a gene'rous public. The trustees desire to purchase a house and section, but ■as they have only , a bout £B4 in hand, it would he necessary for Airs Everitt to saddle ,herself, with a mortgage of some £3OO. a thing not to be thought of. I am surprised that those who have the matter in hand couldn’t see the foolishness of spending the money in this way. Airs Everitt must struggle along for. many years to come until the young children, I believe there are five under thirteen years of age, have reached years sufficient to enable them to earn then own living, and the chances are that future payments might not be met, and the property would of necessity bo forfeited. Tlio money would _be of actual benefit to the woman, as her .children are at present very poorly clad, .and a woman who has reared the family she lias, can surely be trusted to use to the best advantage a small sum like £B4. My chief reason in writing to you, Sir, is to place the 'matter before the public ni a plain, matter-of-fact fashion, and also to dispel the idea that Mrs Everitt has received the proceeds of the concert hold for herT I, and those who know the facts of the case and the urgent need of the money, hope that 1 Iron<di the publicity your valuable paper can give to the. matter, a fivorablc settlement will be made at nnco —-I am* etc., ~ ‘ ‘SYMPATHISER.
