RAKAUROA SPORTS.
AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING. Beautiful weather prevailed on New Year’s Day for the Rakauroa sports, iat which there was a large attendance of the .public. The programme was a, lengthy one and it was not until 7.30 p.m. that the last event was concluded, mid that after the Ladies'Tilting had been deleted. The jumping events were a feature of tlie sports. In the hop, step and jump ■H;, Edmunds was easily first, with ‘39ft llin. The same man, in the high jump, cleared sft lin, but was beaten for first placo by C- (Smith, whose jump, with sin. handicap,-was sft. 4in. The Rakauroa championship was an interesting event, I:last year’s medal winner (F. Shaw being (defeated on this occasion by F. Smith. Shaw had his: foot spiked but, notwithstanding, finished a tgood second. The horse events were not of a high standard, the Gretna Green and leaping contests proving more amusing than anything else.
