THE EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND.
It is somewhat of a reflection upon the civic spirit of Gisborne that it should haVe been left to Messrs Vita Brothers to organise the collection of funds for the assistance'of the sufferers from the Italian disaster, hut it it to be hoped that the request of the Trades and Labor Council in asking the Mayor to take action will re-
sult in the' matter being put on _ a proper , footing. In' affairs of .-this kind speedy action is essential, and assist.ance. promptly rendered is doubly valuable for its opportuneness: Not only that, but the task of collection is very much easier if undertaken whilst the shock of the fearful disaster is still fresh in the minus of the people. Provided His Worship the Mayor takes the necessary steps to give the movement official sanction we feel sure the people of Gisborne will respond generously to the cry for help which just now is ringing throughout the whole of the civilised world from the iiiilvit lunate .people who have been bereaved and ruined in Calabria and c; ■'...: i v •'
