THE WATERWORKS.

THE DEVIATION OE THE FIFE LINE. The proposal to deviate the pipe line of the .Borough water supply was discussed at the meeting of the Council last evening, when the following letter was received from Mr. A. G. Bignell, representative” for the Wanganui Spiral Fipe Company ”Rcferring to the proposed deviation in portion of main line above the present temporary intake v 1 have now examined the plans of this portion, and find the present configuration oi the creek so altered that it is extremely difficult to make even an approximate estimate of. the cost oi the proposed alterations. . I therefore consider it necessary that new lines and levels should be laid clown hv your engineer. Fending this being done, work on the crec'ks affected will lie held over and other portions proceeded with until the arrival of Mr. Hay in Gisborne.” The Mavor said it was expected that Mr. Hay would have arrived m Gisborne last Saturday to meet Mr. Bignell. The Council then decided to visit the pipe line with Mr. Bignell, and the general conclusion was that the pipe line should be deviated. He thought it best, however, that the Council should wait until Mr. Hay visited Gisborne before any deviation was allowed. Cr. Sheridan said the information given to a. reporter was incorrect, and the deviations - that had been made were trivial affairs. The visit of the Council to the pipe line had done no harm, but bad done no good. That' was the feeling of tho whole Council with the exception, of course, of the Mayor. It was decided to ask Mr Hay to visit Gisborne as early as possible or to send a representative to confer with the Council on the question.
