Signor Giolitti has cabled to Mr. , Collins,Commonwealth A gent-General, thanks of the Italian Government for the Commonwealth’s conspicuous contribution to the earthquake fund. The Italian Ambassador in London also expressed the gratitude of his Sovereign and people. • A shock of earthquake at Milan, Venice, Florence and Padua did much damage. There was a panic at Imola, near Bologna. DUKE OF CONNAUGHT VISITS MESSINA. UNIMAGINABLE DESTRUCTION. (Received Jan. 14, 9.35 p.ni.) ROME, Jan. 14: The Duke of Connaught visited Messina. He considers the destruction unsurpassed by auything imaginable. It seemed as if the city had passed through a sieve like ground wheat. MORE LIGHT SHOCKS. SOUTHERN AUSTRIA AFFECTED. (Received Jan. 14, 9.35 p.m.) ROME, Jan. 14. Light shocks were experienced early on Wednesday morning, t r { VIENNA, Jan. 14. Many points in Southern Austria, extending from Sarajevo to Trieste, were among the places affected, which included Botzcn, Meran, and Pola. (Received Jan. 14, 9.5 U p.m.) - ROME, Jan. 14. Shocks were felt at Ravenna, Pisa, Lucca. Pistoa, Perugia, Ferrari, Vona Reggionelli, Emilia, Boluua, and Rimiui. There was much alarm, bat little damage. The shocks lasted from eight to ten seconds. The Florentines abandoned their houses, and the Venetians fled to the Piazza of Saint Mark. [Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. The Warehousemen’s Associations of Auckland and Wellington have subscribed and forwarded to the Italian Consul here £i 10 for the earthquake sufferers.
