SOUTH CANTERBURY JUBILEE.

CELEBRATION AT TTAIARU

TJ-AIARU, Jan. 14. The jubilee of the .settlement of South Canterbury (1859) was celebrated to-day with a monster procession, a ‘([inner to the early pioneers and to the passengers (300" to 400) of the first four ships, sports in the day, and fireworks at night. The weather was beaufcil’uby fine, and the procession or military, trades, friendly societies, <and local bodies was a great success. The officers and men of H.AI.S. Pioneer rendered great assistance. At tlie I'.uncheon at- the Drill H all about GOO guests sat down. Tlie Alayor off Tim uni (Air, J-as. Craigie) occupied the chair, and among the guests was tlie Premier (Sir J. G. V\ a-rd). Short .speeches were delivered by the Alayor, the Premier, and the following pioneers': Messrs F. AY. Stubbs, Hodges, Jas. Blyth, and Arthur H. Turnbull. The keynote was the greatest satisfaction at the progress of -South Canterbury during 50 years. The public rejoicings were very spirited, and popular enthusiasm was shown in many, and various ways.
