BOWLING.
GISBORNE CLUB
Tho Showers which fell on Saturday -afternoon did not prevent those members of tho-Gisborne Bowling Club who -assembled on the green from spending ia pleasant afternoon. ~ A considerable number of players put in in an appearance, and several practice games were got off. The rain made the green rather heavy, but am not seriously interfere with the pL-y. The principal games resulted Ss" follows :
Warren, Paltridge, T. Clarkson, Ponsford (skip) 20, beat Ryan, Wilson, Corson, Ifwerson (skip) 15. Woottou, W. Pettie, Pavitt,. Simson (skip) 23, heat Lucas, Shackleford, Kymc, Quinn (ski-p) 22.
TURANGANUI CLUB. There was a good muster of howlers at the Turanganui Club’s green on Saturday afternoon. A number of practice games were played, and were much enjoyed. One game in the Bennett Cup singles was played, the result 'being: M. G. Nasmith, senr. (25) beat W. Hay (14).—Up to the 10th head the game was close, the scores then being 10 all. From this point, however, Nasmith drew away, and awn easily by 11 -points.’ THE NAiPIER TOURNAMENT (Press Association.) NAPIER, Jan. 17 The Northern Boav-’ing Association’s annual tournament avas concluded on Saturday in fine aveacher, when the match _ for the citizens’ trophies avas decided. Pihama came first, Feikling second, Victoria third, and Napier fourth. The Pihama team avas composed of J. Macfie, R. Lambie, W.- Dudley, and W. Lambie. Pihama beat Feilding by 23 to 17, land Victoria beat Napier by 23 to 19. At the dose of the play the president (Mr. J. C. iMcVey) presented the citizens’ trophies to the avinners, and mentioned that the trophies for the champion fours would be forwarded from Wellington to the avinning teams.
The Poverty Bay representatives at the Napier bowling tournament, avith the exception of Mr. F. Eure (Gisborne Club), who has gone to Wellington on business, and Mr. J. J. Martin (Turanganui Chib) returned to Gisborne on Saturday. Mr. W. Pettie, president, of the Gisborne Club, stated to a representative of the “Times” that ’ the- tournament had been a avell managed and very successful gatheiring. The arrangements were good, and avore so wo’! carried out that everything passed off avithout a hitch. iMr. J. McVey. president of the North Island Bowling Association, did his utmost to ensure the gathering being a success, and the energy and courtesy displayed iby Air. Meutiplay, secretary of the Association, tended very materially to secure the success which avas achieved. Tlie residents of Napier, iMr. Pettie remarked, sheared much interest in tho proceedings, there being largo attendances of spectators the tournament. The ladies- attended the green in numbers, manifested much interest in the play, and also showed much kindly and hospitable consideration for the players. In particular, they ]>roa r ided very avelcome afternoon tea. The members of the Greeumeaclows Boavliug C'lu-b showed _ themselves especially solicitous to give the visiting -bowlers a good time, and organised a very enjoyable smoke concert for tlieir entertainment.
The entries for the champion fours constituted a record, comprising 34 clubs. Play was conducted on two greens belonging to the Napier Club and one of the Greenmeadows Club. The ordin'ary green of the Napier Club was, Mr. Pettie said, ..perfect. The other, which, it is understood, is sometimes used as a croquet lawn, was somewhat erratic. The Greenmeadows green, on the first morning, after a shower of rain, played very well. Afterwards, under the influence of hot weather and 1 'frequent play, it became extraordinarily fast, and very difficult for players not ■accustomed to it to play upon. The mini of the Napier Club was popular and looked upon as well deserved. Napier has sent teams to the competition, for several years, and this is the first occasion on which the club has carried off the honors. The Feilding rink, which fought out the final with Napier, was generally admitted to be of exceptiona strength, and it is to the Gisborne team’s credit that one of the latte] .5 wins was over this fine team. The Gisborne Club’s record of seven wins ■and four losses was a distinctly good one, better than that of the great majority of the clubs which participated in the tournJfinent; _ -
