INVERCARGILL, Jam 19. Yesterday afternoon a five-roomed cottage in George Street, North Invercargill, was destroyed by fire. The place was owned and occupied by Robert Wilson. The bouse was insured in the United office for £l5O, and the furniture in the South British office for £IOO. «
DEATH IN HOSPITAL.

An elderly man ...named John Henwood, an inmate of the hospital .since April,last, died in the institution today, while under chloroform, administered for the purpose of an operation.
A MUNICIPAL POLL
AUCKLAND, Jan. 19
A poll of ratepayers of Devonport, a suburb of Auckland, was taken yesterday to decide first whether the Council should# apply for power to construct tramways in the borough, and second, whether suoli order .should be delegated to the Devonport Transport Company. The first proposal was rejected by 131 to 1049, and the second by 79 to 1907. Fifty per cent, of the voters polled.
GREY LYNN IMPROVEMENTS
The Grey Lynn Borough Council •bis -decided to borrow, subject to a ratepayers’ poll, £45,000 for reading the Surrey Hills estate, and for other borough improvements.

At a meeting to-nigflit of representatives of the Invercargill corporation and the adjoining boroughs it was decided that Wednesday be the weekly shop half-holiday as hitherto. NELSON HARBOR WORKS. NELSON. Jan. 19. For some ycurs the Ncflson Harbor Board has been carrying out a scheme of improvements with a view to opening the harbor to large ocean-going vessels. The works are now approaching compleion, and with a view to reporting on the facilities of the port for vessels of large tonnage, the harbor was to-duv inspected by Captains Bone and iAleDougall, marine superintendents of the New Zealand and Shaw, SaviU and Albion Shipping Co.’s respectively. The result of their investigations lias not been disclosed. NELSON FREEZING WORKS COMPLETED. The erection of the Nelson Freezing Company's works at Stoke will be completed in a few days, and tlm company Guts decided to commence operation/; in February. NAVY LEAGUE—-A BRANCH AT WANGANUI.
