MATAWHEItO STOCK SALES. It was a holiday crowd that attended the weekly sale of stock at Mo,tawhero yesterday, for though there was a large number of people about, bidding ivas slow aud the majority of linos were pissed in. Ewes were hard to sell, no less than eight pens being reserved for private treaty, while, on tlio-other baud, there was a fair demand for fat and forward lambs and wethers. Cattle did not find an active, market. Beef cows solrt' at fair prices, but steel's did riot touch full values. iSHEEP. The yarding of sheep totalled about 2500, the prices for fat wethers showing a slight advance on recent quotations, although the market was well supplied. Two nice pens of wethers in prime condition topped the market at 12s Id and a pen of 389 well forward 2-tootb wethers realised 10s. Lambs also sold well-02 well-forward- .brought 9s 9d, and*2s good sorts Bs. Store sheep met with only a mode Vite demand, many of the pens being passed. The following were the principal pens .sold : 83 tit wethers 12s Id, 32 fat-wethers 10s 3d, 389 well-forward 2-tooth wethers lUs, 13 forward Cwes 8s 9d, 25 fat laniibs Bs. Store sheep : 11 wethers in moderate condition Bs, 39 2-tooth wethers 8s; 02 well-forward Jambs 9s 9d, 127 lambs Bs, 70 lambs 7s Bd, _B3 big woolly lambs 9s 7d, GO at Os 6d, 90 at 0s Id, 17 at Is (id, and 50 cull lambs 3s. CATTLE. The yarding of cattle only numbered about 250, and there was an absence of prime beef. No high prices were realised , the‘butchers being rather cautious of over-buying. The following were the principal pens' disposed of under the hammer, although a number of lines were disposed’ N of privately: 1 forward steer £5 ss, 5 steers £4 ss, 1 beef cow £4 17s 6d, 2 ibeef heifers £4 10s, 2 heavy beef cows £5 10s, 2 yearling heifers 15s, dairy heifer £2, I forward heifer £3 and 2 beef heifers £4. A nice pen of 42 young heifers, all good sorts wore passed in after £2 5s had been offored.

Home and foreign buyers arc in large number, and there is great competition for all descriptions, hme wool is very firm at the December prices. Medium and coarse grades are id higher.
