THE WAIROA- CARNIVAL

A. SUCCESSFUL REGATTA

The carnival was continued to-day in brilliant sunshine. The regatta and aquatic snorts came off -from 11 a.m. The river was alive -with craft of all kinds, ranging from (puffing motor launches to picturesque canoes. The .shipping 'in the river was gaily decked with flags. The banks of the river and the bridge were packed with sightseers. A gentle breeze in the afternoon tempered the heat, hut -there was not even a ripple on the water, which reflected the movements of every passing craft. The To Ata was flagship on which the hand _ was stationed. The greatest interest- centred in tho four oar races. AYairoa gained two and Napier two. The AYairoa men naturally felt pleased at maintaining the honors against the visitors. 'The swimming events were keenly contested. The water polo and greasy polo competitions were easily first for affording amusement. The following are the results: ' Boys Race: It. Bellerby 1, AA 7 . Falconer 2. Corfu Diving: Cooper 1, Bellerby 2, TicCren 3. lOOvds Swim: Retain 1. Spillcv 2, Reid 3. Canoe (2 men): Beta Iveo and Iveta i 1, Pamahacre ami Pewai 2. AYater Polo: Mitchell's team, G points, 1 ) Falconer’s team, 1 Q>oin • 2. Greasy Pole: Falconer 1, Johansen 2

Wahine Canoe Race: Huhana Pik’uvai and Too Oteno 1, Marata M iiiat'e and ivuri Tote 2. •Maiden Fours, XOst 'and under, one mile:. AVairoa 1. The ere as kept toil wav well together and there was a ding-dong race right through. Napier rowed a fine steady stroke, and drew .away in the last 100yds and won hv ’a. length. Maiden Fours, heavy weight, one mile: AVairoa 1. The crews -kept together till a quarter of a mile from home, where AVairoa forged '-ahead and scored a win hy 4 lengths. ' Junior Fours. 1} mile : AVairoa' 1. From an even start the AVairoa crow soon had a slight advantage, which they increased and won in good stylo lby"l-* lengths. Junior Fours, heavy weight, H miles: Napier 1. The Napier men led all the way and won hy tliiec lengths. , ~ ... % The result of the regatta will dp much to encourage rowing an AVairoa. There is every appearance of another - fine day to-morrow tor the show, which should he a record one for AVairoa. .
