F. Sherratt was not present it was decided to defer payment. A letter was received from the Treasury Department approving of a loan of £SOO for the, construction of Darwin Road and stating that the money would not be available until after March 31st. Similar letters were received approving of the loan of £IOOO for the Mangaheia bridge, and the Pouatva stream bridge. The clerk said there was very little probability of the money being available before March 1910, and the letter was rc--ived. 'Mr. \V. Morgan., ‘ secretary of the High School Board, notified the Council that Mr. A.M.rut'facw.s’ term of representation on the Board would terminate Ai Feb. Ist., and asking ilm Conii/? •Ip appoint a representative. /yu. Cr. A. F. Matthews was re-appoint-ed to the Board, and a vote of thanks was tendered to him foi’ his past scriices.

'ENGINEER’S REPORT, dir dcG. Fraser. County Engineer, reported: Contract 254, metal repairs Gray’s Hm, south side. —Satisfactorily completed. . Contuict 250, quarrying spawling, and knapping stone, Gisborne- \Vairoa road, Government grant.—Good progress is being made with this contract, and the stone is being carted on to the road as it is being broken, jflptwurt 249, metal repairs Wail mutti,— -The contract quantity of the -o* stone has been collected and is beuig broken and carted. Contract 248, metal repairs Middle road, etc. —-500 yards of shingle lum. been spread on this road and 100 yards placed in depots for the v.' inter.

Contract 244, metalling Hauibi-Ta-kapau road. —Completed. , { Contract 241, road machines.—Cood work lias been done with the three machines. The Tologa Ray *S%l >ar . lias repaired the Hat roads on yjbotli sides of the river and is now 'engaged at Tak apart. The machine at Tiniroto is repairing the Te Itoinga ~s n d hranch roads near Tiniroto, and tho party in the Arai riding has completed nearly up to "Wharerata, and v.'ill proceed in to the South boundary of the County. Contract 198, metalling Arai-Toko-nui road.—All metal is ready for carting land teams leave to-day to take up the work. Contract 198, erection of bridge at. Fakarae.—Better progress is now , being mado with this contract. Tho \ centre concrete pier erected, . also I piers on the south side, staging is up for the first 100 ft span, and the lower chord assembled and rivetted. "r II .the material is on the ground, and the' contmctov. expects to have the work, completed' by the .end of ■March. Tramline to Arai has been laid off and pegged, and the plans are now in hand. Lysnar held that as the contract had been allowed to pi’oceed to an amount over the grant it was the Council’s duty, to P,ay, because tlie Council was responsible for what Or. Sherratt had done. Cr. Lysnar read three letters from Cr. Sherratt to Mr. Middleton encouraging him to proceed with the work. In reply to the Chairman,; Mr. Middleton said the amount due was £43 and a liability to Mr. Steel of £3l. ' It was decided to pay tlie amount of £43. TENDERS. The following tenders were received for erecting the Mangaliaea Bridge:— F. Overton £1077; J. Griffon £921 3s 6d. Mr. Griffon’s tender was accepted. The Council decided to sign the deed of dedication for Benjamin Street. Malsaraka.
