YOUNG CLERK’S DEFALCATIONS.
THE [RESULT OE GAMBLING. [Pkebs Association.] AUCKLAND, Eob. 2. At the Police Court to-day a well-, ■dressed lad of 18 years, named James Gossett, appeared to answer a number of charges of having misappropriated various monies belonging to his employers. A. B. Robertson, a partner in the -firm of Heather, Roberton and Co., deposed that the accused had been employed by the firm as Customs clerk, it being part of his duties to make out the Customs qn tries.' Accused had at various times been entrusted with ilarge sums of money, some of which had not been accounted 'for by him. The gross amount of the shortage wits Cl 80 8s Gd, of 'which £4B Ids had been' recovered. To dir. Kettle: Tlio witness bad reason to suppose that the lad had been gambling the money jby bookmaking on a- small scale. Detective (Millar produced a. written statement by the accused to the effect that he admitted the offence. The accused had in conversation with witness stated lie had hacked horses. The accused in the Court said that he had nothing further to say, and was thereupon committed for sentence at the Supreme Court.
