THE WAITARA TRAGEDY.
DR. GOODE (BEFORE THE MAGISTRATE'S COURT. [Press Association.] NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb, 3. When tho Magistrate’s Court opened this morning for tho hearing ol ; the charge of murder laid against Dr. Edwin Jonathan (Goode, in connection ivitli tho recent Waitara. tragedy,' there were a, number of spectators waiting for admission. The charge preferred against Dr. Goode -was that on December T 4, at Waitara, bo did murder one iMary Ellen Klenner, by shooting her with a revolver. Mr. H. IS. Fitzherfbert, S.M., presided. Mr. S. Weston (Crown prosecutor) land (Mr. C. A. Weston appeared to prosecute, and Mr. Johnstone, instructed by Mr. Wilkes (Waitara) defended Dr. .Goode, avlio, throughout the proceedings, ivas calm and collected. He has much improved in appearance since the date of tlie tragedy. Ho sat unmoved in tho dock the ivhole day. Mr. Johnstone, on behalf of the prisoner, formally pleaded not guilty, and Mr. T. S. Weston stated that ho Avould not weary the. Court ivitli an oponing of the case for the prosecution, but would at once begin calling evidence. All witnesses ivere ordered out of Court on Mr Johnstone’s' application. The evidence to-day ivas largely on the lines of that at the inquest-, and the formal production of plans, photographs, etc. It is expected that the case will occupy several days.
