TRADES UNION EXPENDITURE
The General Federation of Trade Union’s report for 1908 shows the expenditure to bo £137,152, the record including the North-east Coast engineering dispute (£34,000), and Lancashire cotton dispute (£65,500).

The “Daily Express” states that the London and Paris Exchange liabilities are between £300,000 and £500,000. The creditors are mostly in the United Kingdom. The receiver discharged 800 clerks and typists. THE JOURNALISTS’ CONFERENCE. At the Canada Club dinner, Sir Gilbert Parker emphasised that the Australian journalists would receive the heartiest welcome from their Canadian confreres. AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE. Replying to the toast of the Imperial forces, Colonel Hoad, Commonwealth Commandant, alluded to the benefits of the inauguration of the Imperial General Staff, and emphasised Australians’ interest m military matters. They realised that if Australiahad to be defended it would be almost entirely by citizen soldiers.

The Pontypridd County Court has granted an injunction against the South Wales Miners’ Federation levying money to support members of the House of Commons. WANGANUI HARBOR BOARD LOAN. The Bank of Now Zealand is issuing one hundred thousand 5 per cent debentures of the Wanganui Harbor Board at 101. DEATH OF AN M.P. Sir Andrew Mitchell Torrance, M.P. for Glasgow Central, is dead.
