GISBORNE TO WAIKATO.

REPORT ON STOCK TRACK.

COMPLETION STRONGLY URGED.

[Pbess Association.]

AUCKLAND, Feb. 5

At a meeting of tho Provincial Executive of tho N.Z. Farmers Union the secretary. Mr. Garland reported on the Gisbornc-V aikato stock track. Some £837 had been placed upon the estimates in connection with the work, and the Loads-Depart-ment was doing its best. Ihe road was a continuation of the Y‘.', " f l_ karemoana road, and passed just over tho Kaingaroa- plains, joining the Galatea to Rotorua road. Ho had pointed out to Mr. Vickermau, of tho Roads Department, that later on the road would have to be made Lorn Tiniroto, via Hangaroa district, to this same road, and intersected near Rotorua, via Galatea. It this route wen- adopted it would savejrom tvvo to three da vs with stock from Gisborne. to Rotorua, but, as already stated, the proposed stock road would be most useful, as it would serve most of the Hawke’s Bay sheen runs. Having seen the country Mr. Garland stated that lie would strongly urge the completion of the stock track, v ia AVairoa., Lake TV aikaremoana, an Galatea, not losing sight or the fact that a link should be made with thus same road, leaving Tiniroto, which would save from two to three days drive to Rotorua. The track would then tap two great slieep-producing centres ol the North Island. It true the Government was, making a good road from Gisborne via Motu to Opnti’ki. but the route was indirect-, and much would remain to be done before they could get to Rotorua, which was the point irom which the AVaikato and King Country would be Allen Bell said that as far a S the union was concerned, the-posit-ion was satisfactory, as it- would not be long now before they could have sheep driven through from Hawke s B a v. Alost of the sheep now coming thruogh were taken through from tne Napier end. The report was received.
