Past Provincial Grand Master Thomas (at present District Treasurer of the 1.0.0.F.M.U.) is in town, and he returns to Auckland this week. Mr. W. A. Barton, S.M. left for Wairoa yesterday raoYning to preside over the periodical sittings of tho court there.
Mr. W. D. Campbell, late editor of the “Timaru Herald,” who was the candidate for the Timaru seat at the. recent election, has decided to .relinquish journalism for law. Mr. J. D. Ritchie, (Secretary of Agriculture) will propably succeed Mr. A Barron as land purchase inspector, and Mr. E. Clifton (Chief Inspector of Stock and Director of Experimental Farms), may be promoted to Mr. Ritchie’s present position. It is also possible that Mr. R. Gibb (Inspector of Apiaries at. Auckland), wilrbe Mr. I. Hopkins’ successor as Government bee expert. Ex-Detective Henderson, for over 40 years in the police service, and for a time stationed in Gisborne, died at the Auckland District Hospital last Wednesday night. Deceased was horn near Aberdeen, Scotland, and came out to New_ Zealand at the age of 19, joining-the armed constabulary. Mr. Henderson served hr connection with the gold escorts in the early days or the Otago goldfields. He subsequently joined the police as a mounted trooper, and worked liis way up to be a chief detective at Dunedin, a position he held for many years, lie 'also acted in ,a. similar capacity m Christchurch and Wellington, and seven years ago was transferred to Auckland in August last lie was retired on pension. Mr. Henderson has bcerf ill failing health lor some time, and was admitted to the hospital -soon after the New Year.
