PROVISION-*' FOR STOCK HANDLING-

[To the Editor.] Sir,—Being of a gentle and retiring nature I have no wish to appeal to join the.ranks of those who rus to the paper about everything that annoys them, so will ask you, througn your columns, to draw attention. to the inadequate provision “this .nsm o and progressive district” has for unloading and drafting rams and stoclc brought here by steamer. It is true there is a cattle yard at the wxiai , hut that is no . use when a cargo o say 300 to 400 rams comes up,all boxed and mixed and- consisting cn nal a dozen or more consignments. As things are now the sheep have to D> taken away to either some stables or to Messrs Williams' and Kettle s h^orse bazaar, and are scragged and dragge about there till the consignees are more or less satisfied. There is no need for a drafting race or anything , Kaborate; three or four pens niaoc kwifli moveable • hurdles in the catt.e yard would he all that is required ancl would save the sheep a deal of knocking about and the owners a world or annoyance. I don’t know who are tho proper people to approach in the

matter, but the fact remains that while we talk of “Greater Gisborne,” Tixi a i Ulty,” and so on -we are very little better - off in the ivay of facilities for unloading stock than Noah was. Tw'o or three weeks ago a shipload of tired and travel-worn rams had to be punched through tlio dust and heat right -out to Matawliero before they could be drafted. If you could find a sparo corner in your paper to raise a howl about this you would obligo a large section of the community.—l am, etc., LIONEL G. SAX 13Y. Wkatatutu, February 7.
