A CHARGE OF ABDUCTION. (Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Feb: 11. “A Maori named Whareniatanga, charged with abducting a native girl under 16 years of age, was sentenced to two years’ bard labor to-day at the •Supreme Court. A GANG OF PICKPOCKETS. WANGANUI, Feb. 11. A gang of clever pickpockets and thieves operated very freely at Hawera races yesterday, and many purses were extracted from the pockets of the unwary, women being the partiticular victims. Tim same gang is believed to have visited other race meetings. THE ESCAPED PRISONER, Archibald John McNeil, escapee from the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, and who was captured up the river yesterday,, was brought before the Court this morning, and remanded to appear .at Wellington on the 18th. THE LATE MR. HONE HEKE. WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. The obsequies of the late'Mr. Hone Hekc. commenced this morning, when the body was taken by rail to Otaki, where a tangi is being held to-day. To-morrow the remains will be taken on to Wanganui, and finally to Kaihoe for interment. The Native Minhas gone to Otaki, ai d may go to Wanganui.
A HOMESTEAD BURNED. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 11. - The homestead at Glcnroy, near Glentunnel,, a seven-roomed"" house, with a dairy and storeroom, the property of Frank Hiatt, was burned down at midnight on Tuesday. Nothing was saved. The inmates, Mr. and Mrs. Hiatt and child, had a narrow escape.
WESTPORT COAL CO. DUNEDIN, Feb. 11. At the annual meeting of the Westport- Coal Company, a dividend and bonus was declared of os 3d per share. The Hons. T. Fergus and J. R. Sinclair were re-elected directors.
MR. BUICK ENTERTAINED. PALMERSTON N., Feb. 11. The complimentary conversazione tendered to Mr. D. Buick, M.P., tonight, was most successful. Amongst the speakers were Mr. .Massey, Dr. Newman, and Mr. Guthrie. NEW -LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL CHAMBER. WELLINGTON, Feb. 11. Work'on tlr temporary buiklilig in Government Rouse grounds for the Legislative Council will be begun this week. It will not be an ornamental structure, strie in iitarian principles being adhered to. but the chamber will bo very co id >rtable. Its cost will not exceed WO 00, and the work is being carried out- by the Public Works Department.
